Despite the fact that they are allegedly made in the same factory nothing like an Apex 460. –Ed.]. Not having a solid electronics background, I wasn’t equipped to judge these modifications but they seemed to be in line with other modifications I had read about online. The Apex 460 features dual 1-inch gold sputtered 5-micron diaphragms in a shockmount capsule. The 460's capsule is a common 32mm K67 type, found in nearly every inexpensive large-diaphragm condenser ever made. Well, I’d be lying if I said absolutely not. The primary tool I’m relying on these days to do this is my MJE-K47 capsule. ElaM 251 tube mic circuit kit for Avantone CV-12, Apex 460, Alctron T11A. I could easily afford them all if I’d only increase the studio rate to $500 per hour. The highs were a bit smoother — but that’s about it. Between the CM-12 and the C 12 the response wasn’t identical. install capsule base diffusers where necessary such as in the Apex 460 which has a flat, reflective capsule base and does not uses a conical (diffusing) capsule mounting post and saddle. At the end of the shootout, after revealing the identity of the mics, I wasn’t surprised at all. I imagine it’s possible to have Advanced Audio do any or all of the various possible modifications but I’ll outline the full-blown modification. Slate Digital Launches The VIRTUAL MICROPHONE SYSTEM. Having an affordable option in the “modded” category is a welcome alternative for a growing number of studio owners on a budget and, let’s face it, these days, who isn’t? This circuit delivers a significant upgrade in audio quality and character as compared to the Chinese-made "CCDA" circuit. The Avantone CV-12 blows away a stock Rode NTK. I’d say they had a slightly different character in terms of response curve, but again, one wasn’t necessarily better or worse. another type of mic you can try is a a Ribbon mic they typically have a mellower top end which might suit your vocalist pretty well. Posted by Rob on Jul 26, 2017. The Avantone “Cabernet (C-series)” mics are designed to offer true professional performance. I felt almost nauseated — more so from the image than the fumes. I think the Apex microphone 460 was modified. 4 ... this is an Apex 460 in a different (better) brass housing with a better shockmount. I Am NOT CLAIMING THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU OFFER…just asking…Is that truly an aluminum case?…I only ask, because I initially ordered the anniversary addition..which came in an “aluminum case”…actually it was a cheaply framed case…with a thin type of composite board with a raised plastic sticker on top of all viewable sides…it was a Joke..I’m glad I sent it back and got the regular 460B….I gave up a wood mic box (which this case needed) and a red colored mic…for a pretty sturdy, definitely a lot more protective molded plastic case…I can stand on it…If I did that to the Apex aluminum case…It would’ve been crushed…and they actually put the sticker red surface on slanted…so I could see the…IDK, basically hard cardboard Some have gone up in price and it’s harder to find them for less than $250. I mean the works — capsule, transformer and all. There are a few different options. Riv, new microphones in the Advanced Audio pipeline, Audio Comparison – Black Lion Audio mod for Digi-002R, podcast episode dedicated to the Advanced Audio CM-12SE mod, Interview with Ken Scott and Rod Morgenstein. Many folks raved about the results they were getting from their Advanced Audio mics, while a few others complained about long turnaround times. Although I happily continued to use my modified 460s, I always wondered what it would’ve been like to have them fully modified. the big boys all get there components from china, the same place that Dave gets his, they just won’t admit it…..the guy is brilliant. As soon as my GAS attack subsided a bit, I continued to research the possibility of having Dave modify my Apex 460s. Photos courtesy Congi Thu I can confirm this. The CV-12 is a rugged high-performance microphone that can make any recording sound phenomenal. While the mics were on Dave’s workbench, I looked around for some replacement shock mounts. However my current version uses a lighter three micron diaphragm for a bit faster transient response than the original Neumann capsule. Mk 4 was brighter and man did it pick up the whole room! I knew that the modification had included a tube swap and a minor circuit change but I honestly didn’t care what it was. These modified mics may not have the sex appeal of a vintage Neumann or RCA but they can often hold their own or even outperform their revered competition. To do this, I concentrate on the electro-acoustic system that is primarily responsible for setting the overall timbre-balance or “voice” of a microphone – the headbasket / capsule system. Of course not. He took all the time in the world to answer my questions about his modifications to the 460 and all the various reasons for each change to the original parts and circuit. By taking the output from the cathode in the second stage, the output impedance is much lower than the ‘old-school’ plate output circuit used by AKG in the C 12, the ELA M 251 and even Neumann in the U 47. I also note that they ahve Avant on the circuit board etc. But the capsule, as an electro-mechanical device is not working alone – it sits in the middle of a little wire mesh echo chamber – the headbasket. I don’t think so. +1. Luckily, there are several options in that category as well. Sort by. Most reviews of the HST11A-type mic have identified its stock Chinese transformer as having poor phase response. Avantone Pro CV-12 Large Diaphragm Multipattern Tube | Reverb He put me in touch with someone who had modified a pair for him and that got me going down the path of mic mods. Anyway thanks so much for the review! I could hardly wait to try them out and eagerly opened the parcel. Actually, what really convinced me was the fact that Dae Bennett of Bennett Studios told me that he had a pair in his mic locker. I set up the mics in a double-blind shootout. Everyone should call Dave at AAM and have him take take 5 minutes to demystify the whole microphone manufacturing world. The curiosity kept driving me to continue my research and I was soon considering having the 460s modified once again. Oh well, there might always be another pair in my future. I will be swapping the NTK stock tube with a NOS telefunken e88cc, which I've been told improves the sound immensely. The 460 by Apex has 9 different polar patterns that can be selected with a switch that is on the front of the power supply. I found the AKG to be the flattest and non-colored of the lot. But it wouldn’t have mattered to me and I would have preferred the power supplies with their original, smooth metal finish — even with the Apex logo. That’s fabulous and I can’t wait to put one through its paces. C12 was just terrific, and I appreciate the 24 bit quality. Much to my relief, the mic was not spray-painted. Still, in the back of my mind, I was a bit skeptical in light of the sheer amount of information provided in response to just a few relatively simple questions. I bought a stock 460 today, not having ever heard of it. Wouldn’t everybody love to have the bragging rights that go with owning a beautiful U-47 in perfect condition? The Apex 460 Microphone can be purchased for right around 200 dollars and its well worth the money spent. The circuit is exactly the same between the two so all mods for the Apex 460 on the web apply to the Nady TCM-1050. The Peluso capsules will set you back an additional $150 per microphone on top of that. While Advanced Audio seems to stick with a K67-type capsule, for their CM-47, it’s great to see some other options like your MJE-K47. The MJE-K47 tracks a reference Neumann K47 capsule within +/- 1.5 dB across its main operating range and offers several dB more 16kHz air as one would expect from a lighter diaphragm that is able to transform fast transients (time domain) into extended highs (frequency domain). In high end mics it is again, a … That’s a great deal considering the $849 price tag for the upgraded CM-12. Reading the material on his web site made me want to whip out the credit card and buy everything. On vocals, the difference between the mics was slightly less pronounced. I decided to email Dave myself with a few questions about the mods. Reading Dave’s reply was a bit of a lesson in itself. A 2005 bench test of the Apex 460 by Dan Richards on StudioReviews.com compared it to a Telefunken USA R-F-T M16. It was used for all tracks on her Fearless album.. Steve, from what I gather the CV-12 no longer includes two alternative tubes. Hey there! Capsule change — The stock Alctron HST11A houses a dual diaphragm capsule measuring 32 mm. I kept trying to discover some hidden difference but never managed to find anything that I could identify consistently as being a strong or weak point in either the CM-12 or C 12. Although I didn’t pay anything for the parts, I did promise him a nice dinner the next time we’re out in Vancouver, lest the FCC accuse me of any kind of nondisclosure. To my dismay, it appeared that the chassis of my power supply was now spray-painted black. Although my studio doesn’t boast one, DreamHire, one of the greatest pro audio rental companies, has several and is literally down the street from us, so a C 12 was just a phone call away. This transformer has a reflected impedance of about 100K ohms or less but when the plate is connected directly to grid on the second half of the 6072A the load on the first stage becomes at least 100 times higher plus the plate resistance of the 6072A is also half of the 12AX7. It seems I had found the source of the Krylon cloud. One of the biggest trends in the pro audio world in the last 10 years, apart from the resurgence of the ribbon microphone, has been the modification of lower-end gear to yield high-end results. The differences weren’t readily apparent but upon close listening, I’d say they were simply different rather than one being better or worse. Just because a microphone such as the Advanced Audio CM-12 is similar to a C 12/ELA M 251, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right mic for a given application. Frankly, when one mic stood out with a more brittle high end, I immediately assumed it was the stock 460. Avantone CV-95 Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone. I’m not saying that they were identical but rather that these two mics probably sounded as close to each other as any two different C 12s would. In the case of the CM-12, a slightly smaller but more efficient dual bobbin transformer is used. Will the CM-12 appreciate in value like the C 12 has? My total cost per mic came out to $627. Here my revoicing goal is to reduce internal reflection coloration – most often heard as exacerbated sibilance and smeared time domain response. Of course, this wasn’t a controlled test, but since I had used the mics many times, I was fairly used to the noise floor. I immediately had visions of shop class projects in my head. Matt and Slau, a one-two punch of mic reviewing power! I found his phone number on the Advanced Audio web site and called. That said, on acoustic guitar, I thought the 460’s highs seemed slightly coarse as compared with the CM-12 and the C 12. I found the second mic but put it aside and pawed through the bubble wrap until I found a power supply. But modification can also offer other results. My experience has been that people sometimes spew tons of information in an attempt to appear knowledgeable and authoritative. Thanks for writing this. When I received my first reply from Dave, it nearly made my head spin. Avantone CV-12 Multi-Pattern Large Capsule Tube Condenser Microphone 4.2 out of 5 stars 45. In my opinion, the Advanced Audio CM-12SE performs on par with a vintage AKG C 12 — not bad for a roughly $900 mic versus a roughly $9,000 mic. The ultra-low self-noise level is truly awesome, allowing you to capture sounds with the utmost cleanliness, accuracy, and crisp. These Avantone mics are a case in point, sharing both numbers and looks with iconic models from AKG’s distant past. I soon realized that the reason for his detailed email was not because he was trying to impress anyone but simply because this guy was absolutely passionate about microphones. I decided to go all the way and opt for the Peluso CEK-12 capsules even though I was happy with the stock capsules. The Avantone CV-12 is truly a gorgeous looking and sounding microphone. Sometimes a slightly darker, more mid-range approach is the answer for certain voices or instruments. I mentioned my quest to Dave who pointed out that Advanced Audio sells premium shock mounts for the CM-12 at a reasonable price so I tacked a pair of those onto my order as well. Avantone CV-12 is apparently a clone of the Apex 460. One of the criticisms I had read on an audio forum claimed that Dave was impossible to reach and terrible at returning phone calls. Since I tend to use large diaphragm tube condensers primarily on vocals and piano, I decided to focus my comparison on those sources. It took me a few seconds to realize it was the smell of spray paint. The stock 460 still had a bit of an artificial sheen on the top end of the vocal but it was not as apparent when used with the acoustic guitar. I was running it through a modestly priced Golden Aged pre-73 Mk II. Two days and some 2,500 miles later they arrived safely at the studio. I’ve often fantasized about owning many of the legendary mics that have come through the door. I note that Avant Electronics also produces a similar microphone the Avantone CV-12. Bottom line.. love the warm tube sound, the GAp pre seemed to add more warmth. Frankly, I thought that the stock capsules in my 460s sounded quite good and I considered leaving them as-is. In the 460 and CM-12 the output from the plate in the first stage is no longer driving the transformer directly. A few days later I borrowed a stock Apex 460 from a friend. I think it’s worth every penny as an LDC tube mic for a home or project studio. In every case, the two sounded interchangeable as far as I was concerned. I admired the mic for a few moments, grateful that it it didn’t look like something I might have spray-painted when I was 14-years-old. At that point, I simply had to have a quick listen. This is not to say the electrical system is not important – but the influence of tubes, FETs, capacitors, resistors and transformers is most often heard as a dynamic modulation of harmonics – and while audible, these subtle euphonic artifacts are hard to measure – the level of these artifacts occurring some 20-30 dB or more below the amplitude of the source material fundamentals that create them. When I got a voice mail message, I thought, “Aha! The other thing to consider is that the Advanced Audio CM-12 comes with a better shock mount and an aluminum flight case that’s usually superior to most of the other rebranded offerings. By the time I got used to the idea of calling them by their new name, I received a notification from Dave informing me that the mics, power supplies and shock mounts had shipped. Then again, plenty of people do like the C 12VR despite its detractors’ criticisms. When compared to the commonly used K67-type capsule with its 8dB, 8-9kHz boost (often not de-emphasized in the following circuit as Neumann intended this capsule design to be treated – such as found in the stock Apex 460) or when compared to an edge-terminate capsule with its 8dB or more boost at 12kHz (Many Rode capsules or aftermarket edge-terminated replacement capsules for example), the MJE-K47 offers a more “Neumann-esque” mid-range focus with a gentle 5kHz presence “mound” followed by a flat and sibilance free top end with an earlier HF roll-off. Yeah, swapping out an IC or a tube was never a big deal but, when it comes to changing transformers and capacitors, I knew that I’d be looking for someone to do the mods on these mics for me. How long does modification take? Or, I might simply recite Dave’s own words: Because the 460-type circuit used the second half of the 12AX7 as a line driver (CF output), it is possible to take advantage of this in a couple of ways. It is hard to tell what the original modder did circuit wise but the mic sounds great and works perfectly. The dual diaphragm multi-pattern design gives you nine different polar pattern settings to get the perfect microphone sound for every studio application. I’m going to claim no bias on this one, being a big DIY proponent myself, but in the shootout sound samples by Slau for this review, I could easily hear a not at all subtle difference between the three microphones, with the stock 460 being a bit grainy, the AA CM12SE being nicer, smoother and more detailed but a bit “flat” (I think this is a peluso thing…still like them and own some, though), and the vintage C12 also being smooth but with much more detail and dimension to the sound “depth.” Again this was not a subtle difference. The Sennheiser I’m very excited to hear about your new capsule and have heard that you’re considering releasing a branded mic of your own. Judging from my own adventures with mic modding — which I’ll detail in this article — absolutely. The Apex 460 is a rebranded Alctron HST11A, whose large diaphragm tube condenser design is one of the most widely copied on the market. I can't tell where C8 is, but it couples the tube to the transformer and will also have a big effect on sound quality. Avantone CV-12-BLA Multi-pattern Large Capsule Tube Condenser Microphone. Transformer Swap — It seems that most microphone modifications include a transformer swap of some kind. The Apex 460 is a rebranded Alctron HST11A, whose large diaphragm tube condenser design is one of the most widely copied on the market. The design, character and performance are comparable to some of the finest vintage tube mics of the 1950' & 1960', but at a fraction of the cost. The rugged CV-12 microphone body and capsule assembly are … Not as much as I would have hoped. Oh, and the man can also sing like there’s no tomorrow. In the Apex 460, a similar mic, it is a ceramic cap. Apex 460 Mods. One of the names that kept coming up in my research was Dave Thomas of Advanced Audio Microphones. Again, I’m not a “real” engineer (although I play one in the studio) and I’m perhaps not the best person to explain these mods so I’ll spare my readers any snow job and cut right to the chase. In my case, I bought the 460s for $188 each and paid $439 a piece for the full modification with Peluso capsules. At the suggestion of the staff, I tried the Apex 460. Apex has since changed the design a bit but it’s still quite similar. Virtually all of the DIY mods and mic modders call for a replacement transformer. According to Dave, this transformer, with half the turns ratio of a single winding, offers 6 dB more output overall while improving the signal-to-noise ratio by 6 dB. Amazing warmth and an airy top end, with very good control of sibilance, are this mic's main features. I also wanted to compare the CM-12 to an AKG C 12. Still, I couldn’t help being distracted by the hint of primer and dug deeper. If anything, I think it made me listen even more closely. 04/26/2012. As a companion to this review, I’ve posted a podcast episode dedicated to the Advanced Audio CM-12SE mod at SessionsWithSlau.com. The HST11A has a circuit based on the Telefunken Ela M 251 but with 9 selectable polar patterns found in the 251’s close cousin, the AKG C 12 . Now, I’ve never been one to grab the nearest soldering iron when something went wrong with gear. That improvement alone nearly made up for the spray paint issue. It was biting my ear off before that reliable cap was in there. modified Apex 460 'WAC 12' acoustic.mp3 (5.42 MB, 924 views). If I were going to buy another pair, I’d probably buy the Advanced Audio-branded CM-12 if for no other reason than the power supply has a nice, plain, smooth metal chassis. Apex 460 mic from around 2012 which has an upgraded RK-12 capsule from microphone parts, a Peluso 6072AM tube, and components possibly from an Advanced Audio 460 upgrade kit. Overall: The Avantone CV-12 Tube Mic is an excellent choice for vocals. Not only are there a ton of sites that offer DIY solutions for mic mods, but there are several companies and boutique “mic modders” who offer these services for a reasonable price. However, I would consider it a good investment in the sense that it is a high-quality tool despite its price. Provides true single-triode 6072 tube circuit and T14 transformer, like the vintage 251. Lately, I’ve been perusing a different goal in my work – that of “re-voicing” microphones. Anyone done a comparison of this with these other options? At a certain point, it occurred to me that I had shipped out two Apex 460s but, given the extensive modifications, what I’d be receiving would be a pair of Advanced Audio CM-12s. ... Avantone, Stellar, Nady and ourselves in the CM12/CM12SE models. December 26th, 2015 at 6:40 am I’m not a fan of the stock shock mounts that shipped with my original 460s. Lots of love for Tim but I can't find any user experience about the Beesneez CK12??? Now our C 12 AKG-type capsule has at least 3 dB more output than the stock 32 millimeter capsule. As such, this capsule is the ideal transducer to re-voice bright, edgy or sibilant mics. I’ll probably never hear from him!” A short while later, my call was returned. In all fairness, I do understand that some, maybe most, folks might want to completely distinguish their mics and power supplies from the original brand once they’ve been fully modified. Unlike the 460 this is not "a cheap mic" at least not in terms of performance. The difference works out to about $99 per microphone. Glad to see the mod community up and running cause I will get this mic kicked up a notch! Not sure what capsule brand or transformer however.. Also the mics are great value at US$499.. Will they get the job done? That said, I was quite happy with my 460s. The Apex-branded power supply had a large logo silkscreened on the top. This looks very similar to (IMHO the internals are almost identical to) the mics you have been discussing however the manufacturer say that the components are manufacturered in USA (except the Slovakian tube used) and then assembled in Asia.. I then moved the mics over to our grand piano. For that matter, had I gone for the AA capsules, I would’ve wondered whether I’d have been better off with the Peluso capsules offered by Advanced Audio, which also have an outside diameter of 34mm. Remember that you also have to factor in current prices for a rebranded Alctron HST11A. I read a ton of forum threads dating back several years. Folks who are just discovering Slau’s work will really enjoy his “Sessions with Slau” podcasts. Unboxing of the avantone cv-12. Now what I’d really like to see is this sort of mod-to-beat-the-price-gouging culture spring up around monitors…. These are great days for studio microphone users – nearly identical emulations of classic microphones are within their reach. The mild Canadian accent on the line was Dave Thomas himself. Avantone Jetsun Microphone Shockmount. In the Apex 460, it was an electrolytic. A few dB of extra sparkle was having to be dialed in on cymbals and acou This shockmount is sleek, stylish, and keeps your microphone isolated during a recording by … I positioned them as closely as I could, ran each through a channel on the HV-3D and started off with acoustic guitar. Could I have then been guilty of not listening closely enough? Naturally, but when your clients are paying $50 per hour, it’s not easy to justify a $10,000 mic much less all the other items in the gear lust list. The 460’s bottom end seemed to roll off earlier whereas the CM-12 and C 12 kept going strong to a lower frequency range. So, what exactly does modification involve? It’s worth the extra expense in my opinion. I, too, would like to own a pair of these for stereo stuff. As I mentioned earlier, I knew that, had I not chosen the Peluso capsules, I would have always wondered… Of course, now I can’t help but wonder whether the Advanced Audio capsules might have sounded every bit as good as the Peluso capsules. I decided to call Dave to get a feeling for whether he was just snowing me or was a trustworthy business owner. I’m sure attitudes are no less mixed regarding modded mics. In some cases, additional circuit changes can transform a good piece of equipment into great equipment that might rival the performance of gear many times its price. In many cases, a simple tube or transformer swap can immediately make a noticeable difference in the sound. I contacted Dae’s friend and had him modify my Apex 460s. Tube Swap — The stock 460s (and most other flavors of the Alctron HST11A) come with a 12AX7 tube while the Advanced Audio CM-12 uses a 6072A. Ooops forgot to add the Avant mic comes with the 6072A tube in the device and two alternative slavic tubes are provided when you but the mic for those that want to play with different tone colour etc. This means the feedback in the first stage can be removed and the gain only drops 4 dB. This review got me thinking about about microphone modification goals. #1: Capsule Replacement. I have one on the way here to New Zealand but don’t have any of the others to compare it with but I am looking forwrd to getting it.. ( which I also purchased). Need I pursue this scenario any further to illustrate my point? The HST11A has a circuit based on the Telefunken Ela M 251 but with 9 selectable polar patterns found in the 251’s close cousin, the AKG C 12. I hooked up one of the CM-12s to the first power supply and ran it through a Millennia HV-3D. Our good friend Brian Fox at Fox Audio Research also used the “460… While I knew it wouldn’t be quick, I have to say that the six-week turnaround time for my mics seemed a bit long, though it was made a little easier by Dave’s periodic updates. The Apex 460 is one of the best mod platforms on the market. If it was good enough for Bennett Studios, it was good enough for me. Actually, with the Peluso capsules, they would be considered CM-12SEs (but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll just refer to them as the CM-12s). I used them on several sessions and was always very satisfied with the results. So, given that we compared only three mics and later only two, is it possible that there was some confirmation bias at work even though we did a double-blind test? I’m not a true audio “engineer” in the sense of a guy who can take apart a console module and completely rewire or redesign a circuit. These two mics probably sounded as close to each other as any two different C 12s would. The first thing I pulled out of the flurry of packing materials was one of the new shock mounts. In addition, this more sophisticated transformer can handle 6 dB more level with less distortion than the stock transformer. The Avantone is quite detailed and has a nice height range. A byproduct of switching from the 30¢ Chinese 12AX7 to the $17 Russian 6072A tube is a 6dB increase in headroom. The MJE-K47 is a “rounder” sound. Folks looking for that AKG-like top end sheen no longer have to have a wheelbarrow full of cash to get it. Our padded, wooden mic box housed inside its aluminum travel case is designed to protect the mic during shipping and storage. The first thing I noticed was that it seemed to have a better signal-to-noise ratio than I had remembered. We have multiple mod options for this mic, both sonic and cosmetic. Rather than keep the reader in suspense about the results, I’ll pull off the veil at the outset and speak about my impressions of each mic, with the understanding that my judgements were made without knowing which mic we were listening to at any given moment. The Apex 460 is a Chinese-made tube condenser microphone, usually considered by the audio community to be a rebadged Alctron HST-11A.Lookalike mics vary in capsule and component details; see, for example, the ShuaiYin SYT-1200.. Nice thorough review of a modification from a man who has really dialed-in an affordable emulation of the AKG C 12. Reasonable, that is, when you consider the price of the mics that these modified specimens are said to rival. Because the headbasket and capsule constitute an electro-acoustic system that transduces sound energy into electrical energy, the design of this system is far more responsible for the overall timbre-balance of a microphone, its “voice”, than the following electrical system. Of course, there are more expensive choices like offerings from Peluso (i.e. Both of these mics differ from the popular Apex 460, both because these microphones have switches, and because the output capacitor here is upgraded from an electrolytic to a film type. The 220 pF was nice for a while, but after spending time with it, I just felt it was too midrangey, overall. Rather than striving to create an emulation of a historic microphone by focusing on microphone electronics and using an edge-terminated capsule as is done in the CM-12, I’ve set my sights on re-voicing a broad range of mics regarded by many people as being too bright or edgy – especially for vocal tracks recorded in the digital domain. +1. Much like I doubt Dre uses Beats headphones, I doubt Taylor Swift's engineers picked the CV-12 as their favorite. Avantone Pro Avantone CV-12; Buy at Amazon. To my astonishment (and the astonishment of many others), the two mics were virtually identical, yet the M16 cost about $1,400 whereas the 460 came in at around $230. It seemed like a sturdy mount with better build quality than the stock Apex mount. If I had no other choice, the 460 would have been acceptable, although I preferred the other two. We’re all very fortunate to have guys like you out there to help make the most of what’s available. It is one of her favourites.
